Namoi Councils

The Namoi Councils consist of 5 Local Government Areas – Gunnedah, Liverpool Plains, Narrabri, and Walcha Shires and Tamworth Regional Council and the Namoi Catchment Management Authority.  The Namoi Councils area is located in north west NSW and is bounded by the Great Dividing Range in the east, the Liverpool Ranges and Warrumbungle Ranges in the south, and the Nandewar Ranges and Mt. Kaputar to the north.  The catchment is more than 350 kilometres in length, and includes Coxs Creek and the Mooki, Peel, Cockburn, Manilla, and MacDonald Rivers, all of which join the Namoi River.

The Namoi Councils organisation members work together on a range of initiatives, but environmental  and sustainability related matters have been identified as key areas where working cooperatively can provide significant benefits.

All members of the Namoi Councils are striving to lead by example through the integration of sustainability into their core businesses and reducing their ecological footprint. The Councils have also heard the voice of the Namoi community who have indicated to their councils that environmental issues and sustainability are high on their agenda.

Namoi - Towards a Sustainable Future

The need for Namoi – Towards a Sustainable Future was determined through the development of the Namoi Catchment Sustainability Plan.

The project aims to address challenges to achieving sustainability across the Namoi Councils.

The project is focussed upon seeking innovative and cost effective ways to reduce energy and water use and to improve waste management by the member organisations, the community and major businesses in the area.

In addition, the Riverine Improvement Project is a region wide improvement program highlighting the importance of rivers for urban communities and developing the riverine environment to accommodate multiple uses, including natural habitat and recreational use.  The Riverine Improvement Project will develop a region wide approach to riverine education.  Its aim is to link the urban communities of the region to the river systems that they depend on for their way of life.

The project is being Project Managed and implemented by MB Envirocare Pty Ltd.  MB Envirocare is a specialist environmental/natural resource management consultancy company with a strong commitment to providing a high quality service that addresses its clients environmental, sustainability and natural resource management needs.
